Historic Commission

Up one level

Ashland Historic Commission 2007 The Whipple House had several minor repairs, some painting and electrical. Our Historic old cemeteries were maintained for Memorial Day, Owl brook – Hicks Hill – Leavitte Hill – Col.Mooney – Ruben Whitten – Col.Baker – Church Hill - Thompson, they are reported in good condition with no physical damage to the monuments. The oldest burial ground in Ashland is Church Hill. This cemetery was the first town cemetery for New Holderness, now Ashland. The earliest pioneers rest at this location. During the eighteenth century, Hicks hill road continued over the summit to Church Hill, crossing North Ashland Road. This was the original settlement; there were several log homes on this road. One of the first three selectman, Charles Cox is buried there. Along with Margaret Hicks, wife of Capt. Joseph Hicks who was also one of the first three selectmen. Another Revolutionary war soldier, Capt. Joseph Shepard rests there. Most of the pioneer settlement was from the Durham, Dover area. Thanks to developer Don Latullip there is a new road (Blue Sky Drive) off rout 175 that now makes this historical cemetery accessible. Mr. Latullip has offered to improve the fence and landscape leading to the cemetery. Also, the Ashland Historic Commission is working to install a proper sign for this location.
